Metabolic Disorders

What is Metabolism?

Metabolism is a process that occurs to convert consumed food into energy. Protein, carbohydrates, and fat are in food which is essential for the chemicals in your body to break down. The chemicals in your digestive tract will convert the food into body fuel. If extra energy is not consumed it will be stored as body fat which can then be used when necessary.

How does Metabolic Disorder Occur?

Irregular chemical reactions can disrupt the process of metabolism which causes your body to have too much or too little of a substance. Organs, for instance, that are diseased or function irregularly can cause metabolic disorders.

Effects of Metabolic Disorders

The breakdown of amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and energy-creating areas of a cell becomes irregular.

Different Kinds of Metabolic Disorders

1. Diabetes

  • Type 1- Pancreases produces low amounts of insulin

  • Type 2- Elevated blood sugar level

2. Gaucher’s Disease- Inability to break down a specific fat

3. Glucose galactose malabsorption- irregular transportation of

glucose and galactose across the stomach lining

Treatments

Heart-healthy lifestyle changes such as dietary control and exercise plans are the first step before, if needed, medication.
